Publisher's Description:

SmartWhois - SmartWhois is a useful network information utility that allows you to find out all available information about an IP address, host name, or domain, including country, state or province, city, name of the network provider, administrator and technical support contact information. SmartWhois can be configured to work from behind a firewall by using HTTP/HTTPS proxy servers. Different SOCKS versions are also supported.

Unlike standard Whois utilities, SmartWhois can find the information about a computer located in any part of the world, intelligently querying the right database and delivering all the related records within a few seconds. The program can retrieve information from more than 100 servers all over the world.

SmartWhois can save obtained information to an archive file. Users can load this archive the next time the program is launched and add more information to it. This feature allows you to build and maintain your own database of IP addresses and host names. The obtained records may also be saved in one of the several formats: HTML, text, XML, and XLS. Another useful feature in SmartWhois is the ability to load a list of IP addresses as a text file and processing it.

SmartWhois is capable of caching query results, which reduces the time needed to query an address; if the information is in the cache file it is immediately displayed and no connections to the whois servers are required.

I love this tool. It allows me to ALSO find info on IP addresses, something that other tools do not allow; they only allow domain names to be found.

SmartWhois 5.0 is a quite friendly and good product for Windows platform. Despite overall good look and functionality (it can look for single domain name/ip address as well as for list of names/addresses provided in file) it has some disadvantages. My primary goal using it was to get some info on our internal (organization) domain names ( but the reply was "This upper level domain name is currently not supported".
Being a programmer and researcher I've searched the iNet and have found a list of whois servers, where a server was assigned to the md domain. So, it was not a very hard thing to check this for the developers of SmartWhois.

Firefox 3 - SmartWhois Integration

I have used SmartWhois before - I think it's a useful utility that I would normally activate from my Browser (rather than as a standalone app.

I upgraded yesterday to SmartWhoIs 4.1 but am unable to find a way of configuring it to work in my Firefox Browser.

Under 'Settings>Options>Integration' there are selectable boxes for Internet Explorer and Outlook but there is just a message indicating that Firefox,SeaMonkey, Flock and Netscape extensions are included but are not installed automatically. Press F1 for the Installation Instructions.

Hitting the F1 Key brings up more information in SmartWhoIs Help on 'Integration Options'. This continues all the way down to the end of the 'Configuring SmartWhois' section which mentions the Firefox (et al) extensions. Then the 'refer to Integrations Options' line causes a loop back to the start of the text without telling you how to install the Firefox Extension.

i.e. I haven't been able to complete the installation procedure of SmartWhois into Firefox 3. I also looked on the Mozilla websites for a suitable add-on or extension but without success.

Does this mean that the Quality of the product is defective ?

Great little programme

Excellent utility that, perhaps returns too much information. Really depends why you are using it. Sometimes I just want the e-mail addresses for the abuse@*.* and a little more work I required using other util.
